About the MRCGP SCA (Simulated Consultation Assessment)
The Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA) is a key part of the MRCGP examination set by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). It assesses a doctor’s ability to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred GP consultations to UK standards.
The exam consists of 12 simulated consultation stations, each lasting 12 minutes, with a total exam time of approximately 2½ hours.
The stations reflect real GP consultations and cover:
- New and undifferentiated presentations
- Long-term conditions and prescribing
- Urgent and unscheduled care
- Safeguarding and professionalism
- Patients of all age groups, including children
Candidates are marked on clinical reasoning, management, communication skills, organisation, and patient safety.
